Chief Lift Mechanic / Foreman is a full-time year-round leadership position responsible for overseeing lift maintenance operations, ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of all lift systems, and supporting the resort’s mechanical team with specialized expertise in ropeway systems.

Mount St. Louis Moonstone operates a modern fleet of high-speed chairlifts and advanced ropeway systems requiring specialized technical expertise to maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and operate safely and efficiently.

The successful candidate must possess advanced hands-on experience with ropeway systems including installation, maintenance, calibration, diagnostics, commissioning, and troubleshooting within a high-volume ski resort environment. This role is critical to maintaining operational reliability, minimizing downtime, and supporting the long-term performance and safety of all lift systems.

The Chief Lift Mechanic / Foreman will provide experienced leadership to Lift Maintenance teams, oversee daily operations, mentor staff, and ensure all work is completed in accordance with applicable safety standards, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Operations, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee day-to-day lift maintenance operations and supervise Lift Maintenance staff
  • Ensure safe operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of all lift systems
  • Plan, prioritize, and organize daily work assignments for Lift Maintenance crews
  • Coordinate maintenance scheduling, inspections, shutdowns/startups, and emergency response
  • Perform and supervise:
  • Mechanical Assembly and disassembly
  • Rope inspection, splicing, and maintenance
  • Lift calibration, tuning, and adjustment
  • Rigging and mechanical work
  • Structural alignment and component installation
  • Electrical and mechanical system setup and commissioning
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting of electrical systems
  • Maintenance and repair of electrical systems
  • Construction and installation of mechanical and steel structures
  • Conduct regular inspections and ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards and operational procedures
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection documentation, and work orders
  • Order parts, materials, and equipment as required
  • Train, mentor, and supervise lift mechanics, apprentices, and junior staff
  • Promote a strong culture of health and safety for staff and guests
  • Identify hazards and implement preventative safety measures
  • Ensure compliance with resort policies, lockout procedures, and safe vehicle operation
  • Foster strong communication between Lift Maintenance and other resort departments
  • Stay informed on applicable regulations including:
  • Ontario Elevating Devices Act
  • TSSA requirements
  • CSA Z98 standards
  • Director’s Safety Orders
  • Support lift evacuations and emergency procedures as required
  • Perform other related duties within a mountain resort environment

Technical Experience & Specialized Skills

Candidates must possess advanced experience and training in:

  • Ropeway system setup, calibration, adjustment, and commissioning
  • Fixed-grip and detachable lift systems
  • Steel cable inspection and splicing
  • Lift drive systems, braking systems, hydraulics, and tension systems
  • Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Lift performance optimization and preventative maintenance
  • Mechanical assembly/disassembly and rigging operations
  • Hydraulic tension systems and pipe cleaning procedures
  • Electrical installation supervision and maintenance
  • Electric and diesel motors and associated drive systems

Doppelmayr System Experience

Advanced expertise in Doppelmayr lift systems is required, including:

  • D-Line lift systems
  • D3000 and D5000 grip systems
  • D-type brake systems
  • E-type brake systems
  • Doppelmayr operational and maintenance protocols

Certifications & Experience

  • Valid TSSA SLM-A Certification
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Lift Mechanic
  • Minimum 5 years’ hands-on field experience with advanced ropeway systems
  • Supervisory and team leadership experience
  • Training and experience in lift evacuation procedures
  • Knowledge of:
    • TSSA Lift Operating Requirements
    • CSA Z98-07 / Z98-01 standards
    • Health & Safety legislation and procedures
    • Risk management principles
  • WHMIS Certification
  • Experience operating:
    • Carpet lifts
    • Fixed-grip lifts
    • Detachable chairlifts
    • Snowmobiles
    • ATVs
    • Kubota equipment

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
  • Comfortable climbing lift towers and working at heights
  • Ability to use ladders and safety equipment
  • Physically capable of shoveling snow and performing manual labour
  • Lift up to 40 lbs independently
  • Ability to remain stationary outdoors for extended periods
  • Maintain balance and stability on uneven, icy, and snow-covered terrain
